It is with great sadness that the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) announces the passing of Pierre Jean Meunier, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Lyon University, on May 8th, 2016 at the age of 79 years.
Professor Meunier was a renowned investigator with a forty-year career in basic and clinical research in metabolic bone diseases. His seminal research, beginning with his MD thesis ‘Dynamics of Bone Remodeling’ in 1967, helped to elucidate the pathophysiology of endocrine osteopathies, and age-related bone loss, including osteoporosis. In the 1980’s he worked on the analysis of new therapeutic agents in osteoporosis. He also founded one of the best histomorphometry laboratories in France, the ‘Laboratoire de Recherches sur l’Histodynamique Osseuse’ and INSERM Research Unit 234 in Lyon, France, where he worked with an outstanding team of colleagues that included Prof. P. Delmas.
IOF President Professor John A. Kanis lauded Professor Meunier’s influential work in the field of osteoporosis and rheumatic diseases, “Pierre J. Meunier was a brilliant researcher whose ground-breaking work contributed to our understanding of skeletal turnover in health and disease. As well as his pioneering and influential research, he played an eminent role as a mentor for many of today’s leading experts.”
Professor Meunier published close to 380 scientific manuscripts and books, and was the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Osteoporosis International from 1989 to 2005. He was the recipient of several important awards including the IBMS John Haddad Prize the ASBMR Frederic C. Bartter Award and more recently the ESCEO -IOF Pierre Delmas Prize. He was named Officer of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques, awarded by the French government for services in education.
Among many notable positions, Pierre Meunier was the President of the European Foundation for Osteoporosis (from 1990-1996), Founder and Director of an INSERM Research Unit on the pathology of calcified tissue at Lyon, Founding Board Member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and Founder and Honorary President of the Groupe de Recherche et d’Informations sur les Ostéoporoses (GRIO).
